    Chapter 7

While Yunxing was undergoing his examination, Tan Xu discussed the matter of neutering with the veterinarian.

The doctor told him they would look at the examination results first and then discuss whether Yunxing was ready to be neutered.

    Tan Xu nodded.

Watching the little calico obediently being poked and prodded during the examination, his heart softened.

    A kitten’s checkup was much like a human’s.

There were quite a few things to examine, and they were still in the middle of the physical examination.

Tan Xu checked the time, exchanged a few words with the technician who was coming to install the security camera, and glanced at Yunxing again.

He decided he might as well order takeout to the pet hospital and eat in the staff lounge.

After Yunxing finished the rest of his examinations, Tan Xu followed the veterinarian into the examination room.

Just as the veterinarian was about to check whether Yunxing could be neutered, Yunxing immediately clamped his hind legs together.

    The veterinarian looked helpless.

Yunxing saw the two humans standing behind him, still trying to pry his legs apart, and became furious.

“Huo Xu! You actually brought someone here to look at my butt! I hate you!”

Seeing how uncooperative Yunxing was, Tan Xu knew that the little cat couldn’t be treated like an ordinary kitten.

    He could understand human speech.

He might even have his own thoughts.

So Tan Xu discussed it with the veterinarian.

“Perhaps we should do it next time.”

The veterinarian opened Yunxing’s report and looked it over.

His weight wasn’t quite high enough for neutering yet anyway, and he’d also eaten lunch.

So they could simply schedule another appointment.

    Tan Xu nodded.

He clipped the leash onto the little loop on Yunxing’s harness and picked him up.

“All right, Xingxing. No neutering today.”

Yunxing hadn’t realized what the two humans had been discussing behind him.

Now that he heard Tan Xu say this, he was practically livid.

How could anyone neuter a cat without asking the cat’s opinion?!

Yunxing prepared to extend his claws and give Tan Xu two punches to remind him who the boss of this household was.

But before he could even extend them, Tan Xu caught his paw.

    He gently squeezed it.

The tiny paw opened slightly, revealing the soft pink paw pads.

Tan Xu played with it for a while before letting go.

After having his paw squeezed for a bit, Yunxing’s anger mysteriously disappeared.

He decided that tonight, he would teach Tan Xu a proper lesson in his dreams about how a servant should behave.

The security camera was installed quickly.

To ensure Yunxing could actually be seen in the footage, the camera was mounted quite low.

The live video feed was sent directly to Tan Xu’s phone.

Yunxing stood nearby, watching as the unfamiliar human installed a strange black spherical object in his home.

After the stranger left, Yunxing waited until Tan Xu returned to the bedroom.

Then he approached the black ball.

    He sniffed it.

    No smell.

Tan Xu was opening his computer and preparing to revise his paper when he noticed that the security camera’s feed on his phone was completely black.

    He picked up the phone.

    The screen remained dark.

He began wondering whether the camera had somehow broken immediately after installation.

A moment later, he heard faint rustling from the phone.

    A sliver of light appeared.

As the image gradually came into focus, the first thing visible was a tiny pink nose.

    Then—

    A little cat face.

    Yunxing sniffed the black ball.

    Nothing.

He said a few things to it.

    The object remained completely unresponsive.

So he gently raised his paw and tapped it.

Just as he was preparing to conduct a more thorough investigation—and possible destruction—of this strange object, Tan Xu walked out of the room.

    Yunxing’s attention immediately shifted.

He swaggered toward his newly appointed servant with the most shameless gait imaginable.

Tan Xu crouched down to welcome him.

Yunxing flicked his tail and ran toward him.

He deliberately brushed his cheek against Tan Xu’s face before trotting away.

I wasn’t trying to rub against you.

    I was just passing by!

Tan Xu reached out and missed.

He turned his head and smiled.

    “Xingxing, come here.”

    Yunxing finally magnanimously walked over.

He allowed Tan Xu to stroke his head and scratch beneath his chin.

    Tan Xu’s palm was warm.

    His technique was also excellent.

    Yunxing couldn’t help purring.

Tan Xu noticed how much Yunxing seemed to enjoy being petted this way.

It was a good thing he’d specifically searched online for videos teaching people how to properly pet cats.

“Xingxing, I can see you through this camera.”

Tan Xu put his arm around the little calico and walked him over to the camera.

“I can even talk to you through it.”

Yunxing looked at the black ball and immediately raised a paw to smack it again.

“Then how do I see you?”

    Tan Xu didn’t understand.

“As long as you’re in the living room, I can see you.”

    Yunxing secretly rolled his eyes.

What kind of video call is that supposed to be?

Does he really think I’m an idiot?

A video call means BOTH sides have to see each other!

If only Huo Xu can see me, that’s called surveillance!

Yunxing twisted his body free from Tan Xu’s grasp and ran toward the cabinet where his snacks were kept.

He sat underneath it and began meowing loudly.

Tan Xu immediately understood what the little calico was after.

    He couldn’t help laughing quietly.

    Yunxing looked at him.

He’s laughing at this Mountain God again!

At lunch, Yunxing had noticed the dried fish inside the cabinet.

And Tan Xu had given him that horrible watered-down meal earlier.

He was still angry about it.

    Compensation was required.

Yunxing stood beneath the cabinet and meowed several times.

Tan Xu deliberately pretended not to understand.

    “What is it, Xingxing?”

    Yunxing stood up.

He walked over to Tan Xu and hooked one front paw around his trouser leg.

    Then he tugged.

    Tan Xu took one step.

    Yunxing tugged again.

    Another step.

It took an absurdly long time, but eventually Tan Xu arrived at the cabinet.

Yunxing couldn’t help mocking him internally.

And this guy is a university student?

He can’t even understand what a cat is saying.

Yunxing paced beneath the cabinet twice.

“Come on, Huo Xu. Get this Mountain God a couple of dried fish.”

Tan Xu knew Yunxing wanted something.

He just couldn’t figure out exactly what.

Since Yunxing had eaten not long ago, Tan Xu grabbed a feather wand instead.

He wanted to play with him.

Yunxing looked at the feather wand.

    Oh my goodness.

    My fellow cats.

My servant is so childish that he needs ME to play with a toy meant for humans to entertain cats.

Tan Xu crouched down and waved the toy in front of him.

    Yunxing narrowed his eyes.

He lazily batted at it once.

    He caught it effortlessly.

    Yunxing sneered.

Huo Xu, you’re really terrible at this.

Seeing Yunxing’s half-hearted attitude, Tan Xu deliberately waited until the little cat was about to touch the ball before suddenly raising the toy.

    Yunxing missed.

    His eyes immediately lit up.

    He regrouped.

This time, he would show Tan Xu what he was capable of.

After countless failed pounces, however, Yunxing gradually lost patience.

He was even tempted to punch Tan Xu.

    But he held himself back.

He was a cat who valued sportsmanship.

Tan Xu saw Yunxing standing still.

    He raised an eyebrow.

    “Want to try again, Xingxing?”

Yunxing gave him a sideways glance.

    Now!

    He suddenly pounced.

His paw slammed down firmly on the ball.

Then he looked up at Tan Xu with the smug expression of a victorious kitten.

Tan Xu hadn’t even intended to pull the toy away.

Seeing Yunxing looking so proud of himself, he placed the feather wand on the floor and applauded.

“Xingxing is amazing! How are you so good?”

Yunxing sat down and raised his head proudly.

His tail swished behind him, tapping against the floor.

“The Mountain God has always been this amazing.”

After playing for a while, Yunxing still couldn’t stop thinking about those dried fish.

But Tan Xu still showed no sign of voluntarily giving him any.

    Yunxing couldn’t help sighing softly.

Tan Xu heard the little cat sigh in the middle of playing.

    “What is it, Xingxing?”

Yunxing couldn’t be bothered to deal with this idiot who couldn’t understand cat language.

He simply flicked his tail and walked away.

    Tonight I’ll steal them myself.

    No.

They’re mine in the first place.

I’m merely taking back what’s rightfully mine.

Tan Xu had considered learning how to make homemade cat food for Yunxing later.

But he couldn’t even cook proper human food yet.

It was probably better not to challenge Yunxing’s taste buds just yet.

Seeing the little calico swagger away, Tan Xu sighed.

He opened the cabinet, picked out a bag of cat food, and poured some into Yunxing’s bowl.

    Yunxing had excellent hearing.

The moment Tan Xu opened the cabinet, he’d already come running.

He pretended to rub against Tan Xu while constantly meowing beside him.

Ever since discovering that Tan Xu couldn’t understand cat language, Yunxing had stopped saying anything meaningful while acting cute.

He simply used meow and meow-ao instead.

    Tan Xu wouldn’t understand anyway.

Seeing Yunxing appear every time he opened the cabinet, Tan Xu crouched down to pour the food.

    He couldn’t help teasing him.

“Little glutton. Careful, or you’ll turn into a big truck.”

    Yunxing had been happily eating.

The moment he heard Tan Xu say that, his ears twitched.

He pulled himself out of the food bowl, marched over to Tan Xu, and delivered—

    Bam! Bam!

    Two punches.

Yunxing still remembered that he had dried fish to eat tonight.

And Tan Xu had said he’d turn into a big truck.

So he decided to eat a little less.

Yunxing himself didn’t think anything of it.

    Tan Xu, however, became worried.

    He kept asking beside him,

“Why are you eating so little? You won’t turn into a big truck.”

    Yunxing became annoyed.

    Bam! Bam!

    Two more punches.

    Tan Xu finally stopped talking.

But after those two punches, he picked Yunxing up anyway and spent quite a while kissing and rubbing the little cat’s head.

Late that night, Yunxing pretended to sleep in the new cat bed that had arrived that day.

Tan Xu had even placed a little pillow and blanket inside it.

Yunxing quietly rested his head on the pillow.

But his ears remained on alert.

When he heard Tan Xu enter the bedroom, he didn’t make a move.

Tan Xu had only just come in.

    He definitely wasn’t asleep yet.

After a long, long time, the world outside gradually fell silent.

    Yunxing quietly opened one eye.

    The room was completely dark.

But as a feline, his night vision was excellent.

He slowly stood up in the cat bed.

The little blanket slid from his back.

    Yunxing looked back at it.

Then he slowly made his way toward the cabinet where the cat food was stored.

The cabinet was still somewhat high for Yunxing in his calico form.

    He looked around.

The cardboard box from the cat food delivery was still there.

Yunxing walked over and grabbed it with his teeth.

He dragged it toward the cabinet.

    His plan was simple.

If he placed the box underneath the cabinet and stood on top of it, he could jump from the box onto the cabinet.

    At that exact moment—

Tan Xu, who had been tossing and turning and unable to sleep, heard a strange noise coming from the living room.

    Tan Xu: “…?”
